Dignity & Respect: Staff Observations

Section 1: Communication & Interaction

Do staff knock and wait for an answer before entering a resident's room?

Are staff communicating at the resident's eye level (not standing over them)?

Do staff explain what they are about to do before commencing any care task?

Are staff speaking to residents in a respectful tone, avoiding 'infantilizing' language (e.g., 'sweetie', 'good girl')?

Section 2: Privacy & Personal Care

Are doors and curtains fully closed during personal care or clinical procedures?

Is the residentโ€™s body kept covered as much as possible during dressing/washing?

Do staff ensure that conversations about a resident's care are held in private and not in communal corridors?

Are residents' preferred names used consistently by all staff members?

Section 3: Choice & Independence

Are residents offered a choice of what to wear and what they would like to eat?

Do staff encourage residents to do as much for themselves as possible to maintain independence?

Are residents asked where they would like to sit or spend their time, rather than being placed by default?

Is there a respectful 'handover' of care if a staff member needs to leave the room?
