Mealtime: Dining Experience & Atmosphere

Section 1: Atmosphere & Environment

Is the dining room free from 'clinical' distractions (e.g., medication trolleys, hoists)?

Is there a pleasant aroma of food, and is the noise level conducive to a relaxed meal?

Are tables set with appropriate linens, condiments, and real crockery (not plastic unless required)?

Is background music appropriate for the age group and at a volume that allows conversation?

Section 2: Staff Presence & Interaction

Are staff sitting down to assist residents rather than standing over them?

Do staff engage in meaningful conversation with residents, rather than talking over them to other staff?

Is the meal service well-paced (not rushed, but not leaving residents waiting too long between courses)?

Do staff check with residents during the meal if they are enjoying their food?

Section 3: Choice, Dignity & Independence

Are residents shown the meal options (visual choice) if they have cognitive impairments?

Are specialized cutlery or 'plate guards' used discreetly to promote independence?

Are residents wearing their own clothes/protectors (rather than communal aprons/bibs)?

Is assistance provided with dignity (e.g., wiping a resident's mouth discreetly and only when needed)?
